Frequently Asked Questions
We’re here to help, so let’s get started right now by answering some of the questions that may be on your mind.
You don’t need a partner at all! While ballroom dancing is “partner dancing,” our classes are designed for people to show up with or without a partner. If you don’t have a partner, you’ll typically find someone in the class who wants to partner with you. In some cases, if there are extra men or ladies, the instructors or assistants will partner with you.
For private lessons, you’ll be dancing with your instructor (either Joel or Clara). You can even move into Pro/Am competition if you want, where you get to dance with your professional partner in a fun, competitive environment. It can be very fulfilling, and a great way to push yourself to earn faster.
For beginners, wear whatever’s comfortable for you! Just make sure that your shoes won’t scratch or leave marks on our wooden floor. Also, you might find it challenging in flip flops or really high heels as they will affect how well you can dance.
For other dance levels, you should consider real dance shoes because they have suede felt on the bottom that enables you to move well, to slide your feet, and to turn easily.
Competitive dancers should dress appropriately for their lessons.
The idea of dance lessons is often a very foreign idea to many people here in Vancouver. It’s just not part of our culture. Many people look at TV shows such as ‘Dancing With the Stars’ or ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and say that there’s no way they would want to do that. Dance lessons at JC Dance Co. aren’t that intense or flamboyant; they are actually totally different.
Unlike our modern society today, the dance floor is still a traditional place where the man must take full responsibility in leading his lady. It just looks too awkward when a lady is leading a man around the floor.
Therefore, dance lessons are very much about a man learning how to lead his lady and for a lady to react/follow to the indications given by her man. All the fancy steps, extra arm styling and emotional gestures are just optional additions to an otherwise very technical skill of leading and following. Many professionals from very technical backgrounds like engineering, computer science, medicine, law and finance love the technical structure of ballroom dancing.
If this still doesn’t appeal to your significant other, come out yourself and have a great time within a fun loving and supportive community of dancers. Don’t worry, it happens more than you think!
Trying to guess how many dance lessons you need is a bit like asking how long will it take to be a good swimmer. It depends on so many factors. Some people learn faster than others. Some have certain kinds of background experiences that make it easier to catch on to key things. Some have very busy lives making it harder to practice or even focus on what you’re learning. And your goals are also part of the equation. Do you just want to learn enough for a single dance event, or are you planning to learn a life skill that you can be proud of?
In short, we recognize everyone is different and we will do our best to get you to your goal as efficiently as possible. We can’t estimate the number of lessons you need until we get to know you and your dancing much better. In the mean time, we can guarantee you’ll have fun in your lessons and will get one step closer to your dancing goals each and every lesson.
All JC Dance Co. group and private lessons are made with busy people in mind.
Our the group beginner and intermediate classes run on a cyclical format so there is no formal start or end day for the full program. Package holders save money by purchasing all the lesson credits at the start, but can choose when to use the credits depending on which dance is being taught and if they are available to attend the class. We just suggest for beginner students to always start on the first class of a dance and not the second class. You can easily check the class schedule on our calendar.
As for private lessons, be confident you will never be pressured into signing a private lesson package contract unless you want to purchase one of our Wedding Dance Lesson packages. All our private lessons are pay-as-you-go. We’re confident you’ll want to come back for more. Therefore we don’t try to trap you into long commitments like other dance companies do. We believe a flexible relationship is a balanced relationship!
